Canadian elected to Artist-Blacksmith Association of North America’s Board of Directors
Whycocomagh, Nova Scotia (June 13, 2012): Canadian maritime blacksmith, Grant Haverstock, has been elected to the Board of Directors for ABANA (the Artist-Blacksmith Association of North America) the largest, best-known association of blacksmiths worldwide.
Haverstock owns a traditional blacksmith shop on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, called FireHouse Ironworks, where he provides custom ironworks, as well as training and education in the blacksmith craft. He is also president of the Cape Breton Blacksmith’s Association, whose membership includes about 55 blacksmiths from Cape Breton Island.
ABANA announced Monday that Haverstock is one of five new members who will be elected to its board of directors in the fall of 2012. Haverstock will be the only Canadian sitting on the board of fifteen.
“As President of ABANA I want to thank Grant for stepping up to be considered a candidate for the ABANA Board of Directors.” said Peyton Anderson. “It is with great pleasure that I officially announce that Grant will become an ABANA board member at this fall’s board meeting.”
Founded in 1973 by a small group of blacksmiths in Georgia, ABANA is now the preeminent blacksmithing organization in the world, with over 5000 members worldwide. The non-profit organization is dedicated to preserving the art of blacksmithing.
“It is my intention to promote the craft and strengthen ties between the US and Canada through our chosen craft, regardless of borders,” said Haverstock. “I thank the president and current board members of ABANA for recognizing that there is indeed a vibrant blacksmithing network in Canada. It is with great pride that I accept this position on their board.”
-Blacksmithing has been making a renaissance as an art form, especially with growing demand for custom artistic ironwork. ABANA and local associations bring blacksmiths together to share knowledge and skills, helping to preserve the craft.
